Non-Surgical Facial Contouring: Do Dermal Fillers Change Your Face Shape?

Dermal fillers have become a widely popular form of aesthetic treatment due to being minimally-invasive, offering immediate results with reduced side effects. Particularly effective if you are wanting to reduce signs of age on the face, hyaluronic acid is one of the more popular substances to use for injections. But do dermal filler injections change the shape of your face?

Dermal fillers are particularly effective at improving facial contouring and structure. This will in turn subtly adjust the shape of your face, mainly to restore volume loss and therefore a more youthful appearance. However, these fillers will not cause permanent changes to your face shape, and will dissolve with time.

Keep reading to learn more about how dermal fillers can be used to improve facial symmetry and shape.

Do Fillers Change the Shape of Your Face?

Dermal fillers are primarily used to help restore volume that has been lost in your face. Typically using hyaluronic acid – a naturally-occurring substance – these fillers are the ideal solution for minimising the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and other signs of age that appear on our face as we get older.

While these dermal fillers are incredibly effective at restoring lost volume and improving facial contouring and symmetry, these changes to your face shape will not be permanent.

Can Fillers Slim the Face?

By using strategic injections of dermal filler, an expert clinician can create the illusion of a slimmer and more defined face. By injecting filler into areas such as the cheeks, the lower half of your face will appear thinner. The overall goal of using dermal fillers is to achieve a more harmonious appearance that looks natural.

How Do Dermal Fillers Work?

As we get older, our skin produces less collagen and elastin: two proteins that are vital in maintaining skin volume and elasticity. By using dermal fillers, this volume and firmness that has been lost can be effectively restored. The hyaluronic acid that is in most dermal fillers attracts and binds water molecules, creating a volumising effect. This smooths out the skin to create a rejuvenated look that appears natural.

What Are the Side Effects of Dermal Fillers?

Due to the minimally-invasive nature of dermal filler injections, there are very few side effects that can be expected following the treatment. Generally speaking, side effects are limited to mild swelling and bruising at the site of injection. Some patients may also experience redness around the targeted area. These symptoms should subside in a few days after treatment. To ensure a smooth recovery process, we would typically recommend that you do not take part in strenuous exercise for 48 hours after your treatment, and do not apply makeup to treated areas for the same period.

Does Your Face Ever Go Back to Normal After Fillers?

With time, your body will break down dermal filler injections and your face will return to its original shape. At this point, you may wish to receive another round of injections to maintain your rejuvenated appearance. However, this decision will be entirely up to you.
