What Is Profile Balancing?

When it comes to aesthetic treatments, most of us have probably heard of Botox or fillers. Ideal for restoring self-confidence, these treatments often only look at the area of concern, with over-treatment possibly leading to an unbalanced look. Profile balancing is a lesser-known treatment option, designed to enhance the natural harmony of your face without bringing an unnatural look.

Profile balancing is all about enhancing the existing proportions of your face, not chasing perfection. The changes are often very natural-looking, but can have a dramatic impact. Features that impact your side profile, like the nose, lips, chin, and jawline, are brought into alignment, boosting overall facial symmetry.

So, what is profile balancing and how does it work?

Profile balancing uses non-invasive treatments, often dermal fillers, to adjust facial features and create a uniform harmony across the face when viewed from the side. This procedure should be tailored to you,  designed to bring out your natural features, not change your looks dramatically.

Typical treatment areas include:

  • Nose
  • Chin
  • Jawline
  • Lips
  • Forehead

In this blog, we’ll take a look at why your side profile matters, what areas of the face are involved, and what to expect at your appointment.

Understanding Facial Proportions and Symmetry

Beauty is often less about our individual features and is more about how our features look in relation to others. Studies show that symmetrical faces are considered more attractive, with balanced facial proportions playing a big part. However, complete symmetry shouldn’t be the goal, as too much symmetry can be perceived as boring

The goal of profile balancing is to bring all of our facial features into natural balance with each other, so that your overall look is improved but doesn’t appear too unnatural. Even minimal treatment can improve the harmony of the side profile, which can help us to look past slight misalignments that can affect how we view our faces.

What Are The Key Features Involved In Profile Balancing?

Profile balancing shouldn’t be a one-size-fits-all treatment. Your provider should create a custom treatment plan tailored to your facial structure. However, a number of key areas are commonly considered for treatment, including:

  • Nose: You may want to soften bumps or lift the tip of the nose, helping to align it with the chin and forehead.
  • Chin: Filler might be used to bring the chin forward or add definition, bringing together the side profile.
  • Jawline: Treatment here could reduce the look of jowls or provide a stronger jawline.
  • Lips: Serving as a central point between the nose and chin, adjusting the shape or volume of the lips can improve the balance of the side profile.

Your treatment should prioritise natural results that complement your existing anatomy, not an artificial look.

What Is The Role Of The Jawline And Chin In Profile Balancing?

The chin and jawline are crucial features of the side profile of our faces. They are the foundation of a strong and balanced profile, which is why they’re often a focus alongside the nose. The lower face can play a large role in the overall balance of the face, with a defined jawline and strong chin often being associated with youthfulness.

Using aesthetics treatments to bring the lower face forward and add more contours to the jaw can not only make us look younger, but also improve the alignment of the nose, lips, and chin.

What Can I Expect During A Profile Balancing Appointment?

Knowing what to expect during a profile balancing appointment can help to make the process less intimidating. Here’s what is typically involved:

  • Consultation

A detailed consultation should be the first step in your profile balancing process. Your existing facial features should be examined, and your goals discussed, to help narrow down which areas might benefit from treatment.

  • Treatment Plan

You should then receive a bespoke treatment plan. This should detail which areas will be treated and the recommended procedures. Profile balancing typically uses dermal fillers in areas like the nose, chin, or jawline.

  • Procedure

Profile balancing uses non-invasive injectable treatments to create facial harmony. These have little downtime, and you’ll be able to return to the majority of activities immediately after your appointment.

  • Recovery

Injectable treatments may come with mild swelling, redness, or bruising. These should resolve without intervention after a few days, and you should always consult your practitioner and a doctor if you’re suffering anything more serious.

  • Results

The results from dermal fillers are often visible immediately after treatment. They’ll take a few days to settle and can last anywhere from 9 to 18 months.

FAQs

Which Products Are Used For Profile Balancing?

To achieve a balanced profile, we inject FDA-approved dermal fillers, like Restylane or Juvederm, into the relevant areas of the face. Typically made of hyaluronic acid, dermal fillers are entirely biodegradable and can be removed using a reversing enzyme if necessary.

Are Profile Balancing Treatments Painful?

You might feel some minimal discomfort during your profile balancing treatment. Dr Thomas uses both advanced techniques and, where necessary, numbing agents to ensure your comfort. Some patients may also experience mild swelling or bruising, but these effects are usually temporary.

What Can I Expect During My Consultation?

During your consultation here at Infinity Aesthetics, Dr Thomas will assess your facial structure, discuss your goals and recommend a customised treatment plan. This initial consultation is an opportunity for you to ask questions and understand the procedures, and for us to set realistic expectations for the results.
